Book Review: Lords Of Destruction by James Silke & Frank Frazetta

In this second book in the Death Dealer Series, Gath of Baal is once more enslaved by the power of the Horned Helmet. Only Robin Lakehair can set him free, but can she do it before the evil Nymph Queen takes control and forces Gath to kill her?

I enjoyed this book as much as the first one. Gath is an unstoppable force whether facing ordinary men or demonic shark-men and gigantic bats. The fight scenes in this book are very cool and well written. There is a little more romance in this one then there was in the first one, which was okay with me. Cobra comes off much more interesting and complex this time around, while Robin remains kind of clueless but sweet. I really like Robin's new love interest, Jakar, though Brown John remains my favorite character. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Book Review: A Dragon's Path To Ascension by J.C. Harker

This is a short story about a young woman named Tharia, who is part dragon. It's part of the Dragon's Reborn Series. On the run from hunters after her hide, Tharia makes the choice to Ascend, even though it will mean killing one of her own kind.

I really enjoyed this story. It was exciting to follow Tharia as she fled her pursuers, and the battle between her and Kaima was unique and very well written. This story has some great visuals. If you like dragons and magic and have a little time on hand to be swept away on an engaging journey with an unexpected ending, then I highly recommend this short story.

Book Review: A Not So Singular World by Patrick Hatt

On Jeremiah's birthday he finds his whole world turned upside down.  He's hit by a car that appears out of nowhere, told he has cancer (or doesn't), gets chased by government type henchmen and a nutty bounty hunter with a love of music, and meets the girl of his dreams.  Everybody's after Jeremiah and as a couple of power hungry gods join the chase things just get weirder and weirder.  Can Jeremiah survive long enough to learn the secrets of his heritage and save the world, or will he lose the new family he's found?

I really liked the story of this book but I didn't care much for the writing style. There was a lot of head hopping going on within the scenes which left me a little confused. And there were a number of times when I couldn't tell who was talking because of a lack of dialogue tags. There were a couple of cool fight scenes and I liked the characters (especially Puck even though he wasn't in the story much).  But there were an awful lot of people 'noticing' things like other people's expressions or even actions and I found that annoying.

So, even though I liked the story and the characters, because of the writing style I wouldn't read anymore of the series.

Book Review: Prisoner Of The Horned Helmet by Frank Frazetta and James Silke

The Kitzaak Horde is overtaking and devouring all the land they come across. When they reach the lands of forest dwelling barbarians the never defeated army seems assured of victory. Only one man, Gath of Baal, has any hope of stopping them. With the help of a magical helmet belonging to the Master of Darkness, Gath becomes the Death Dealer, an unstoppable demon with a thirst for blood. But the helmet extracts a price for its service; one that may cost Gath his life.

At first, it was a little hard for me to get into this book because there wasn't a clearly defined main character. It's a big story and requires a number of varied viewpoints to tell. But once Gath and Robin Lakehair, and old Brown John get into the picture the story is rolling along nicely. I liked the characters once I got a chance to know them.  There's plenty of action in the book and a little romance. I like the voice of the story, although I did have to roll my eyes a little at the way the two main female characters, Robin and Cobra, were described.

I enjoyed the story and look forward to reading the next one in the series.

Book Review: Sole Survivor by Dean Koontz

A year after his wife and kids are killed in a plane crash, Joe Carpenter's life remains a shambles. Every day is a struggle just to take his next breath.  Then, on the anniversary of the crash, he goes to visit their graves and meets a mysterious woman named Rose. She claims to have survived the devastating crash and to hold a secret that will bring Joe peace.

Joe soon finds himself chased by shady characters and fleeing for his life as everyone Rose comes in contact with seems to commit suicide.  Someone doesn't want Rose's secret to come out and will do anything to stop that from happening. As Joe races against time to find the truth his whole world is turned upside down. Everything he believes is put into question as reaches for one desperate hope; that just maybe one of his children survived the crash as well. But will the truth give him back his life, or change it forever?

In true Koontz fashion, this novel is a roller coaster ride from beginning to end. Surprises wait around every corner and the ending is one that you'll never see coming.

NEW STORY

Cover for 'Sword of Darkness'

Book Review: The Eyes Of Darkness by Dean Koontz

Christina Evans is a former chorus girl running her first major production for a Las Vegas casino. This is how she meets Elliot Stryker, a former member of army intelligence turned lawyer. Their instantaneous and powerful attraction and connection is typical of the kind of romantic situations that you would usually find in a Kootz book. When Christina decides to exhume the body of her twelve year old son Danny, who was killed in a bus accident along with a number of other boys, she asks Elliot to handle the legal aspects for her. From there, things start to get weird.

Christina has recurring dreams that her son is reaching out to her for help. Messages begin to appear with the words 'not dead'. At first, she suspects her ex-husband or perhaps some unknown person with a grudge is playing a cruel and terrible joke. But as the strange happenings escalate, it becomes clear that no ordinary person is responsible. Is Danny reaching out to her from the grave? Or is the truth far more complicated and strange?

From the bright lights of Las Vegas to a secret military compound in the Sierra's, the couple must outrace armed hit men as they try to discover what really happened to Danny and the other boys.

As always, Koontz delivers a roller coaster ride of twists and turns that lead to an unforeseen and unexpected conclusion.

Book Review: Whispers by Dean Koontz

A psychotic serial killer hunts a woman he believes is possessed by his dead mother's spirit.

This is a roller coaster of a journey that will take you from sunny Los Angeles to the storm tossed Napa Valley. As always, Koontz's characters come alive on the page and every scene is beautifully set to draw you deeper into the story. Is there a paranormal force at work, or is the evil lurking in the shadows all too human? This story will keep you guessing to the end.
