INTERVIEW

What inspired you to write this book?
I have loved fantasy most of my life inspired by the likes of Brooks, Goodkind, Salvatore, Tolkien, and Jordan. I also loved the Harry Potter Series. I feel that I have captured a Harry Potter meets Lord of The Rings balance in this series.

Can you give us an interesting fact about your book that isn't in the blurb?
As the story develops, you think you can pick out the good guys and the bad guys, but as the story continues, you will see many twists and turns and betrayals you could never have imagined.

How did you choose your title?
The country I named after some words I created that sounded magical to me...Ter Chadain…pronounced Tare Shaw Dane. With Logan and Teah wanting to once again claim the country for their bloodline, Reclaiming Ter Chadain seemed like the perfect choice for the title.

Book 2, finds things going terribly wrong for Teah’s and Logan’s efforts to put Teah on the throne when she is taken across the sea to Caltoria where all those with magical abilities are enslaved by the use of a magical stone placed upon their forehead. The darker the color of the stone indicates the stronger magical power the slave possesses. When Teah is enslaved by the stone, her stone turns black. Black Stones of Ter Chadain fit this installment of the series perfectly.

Book 3, is now the time where Teah and Logan can concentrate once again on taking the throne of Ter Chadain. The book marks the Return to Ter Chadain for the heir to the throne.

Tell us about the cover and how it came to be.
Book 1
Logan and Teah’s life changed on the day their foster family was killed and their farm burned to the ground. That is the reason for the firery scene. The symbol is the image that appears on Logan and Teah when they become Protectors of Ter Chadain.
Book 2
I wanted to put images of Teah and Logan on the cover of book two as the story becomes even more personal for them and their fight to be free of enslavement. Note the image of the crown and crossed swords on their left breasts marking them as Protectors.
Book 3
This is a commissioned piece of art from Suzanne van Pelt of a scene when Teah arrives back in Ter Chadain and is met by the Ter Chadain Armada defending against invasion from Caltoria. Suzanne has perfectly captured the essence and determination of Teah at this moment in the story.

Did you selfpublish or publish traditionally and why?
Each of my published novels has been through a small press or boutique press. I have found that this approach gives me more control over my content and creative interest while not overwhelming me with all that it entails to selfpublish. I have been very luck to find committed and talented people who share my vision to work with and make my stories come to life.

What do you consider the most important part of a good story?
I believe in creating believable characters and placing them into extraordinary situations and trusting that they will behave in a manner that is inspiring, entertaining, and always unpredictable. If you don’t write believable characters with strengths and weaknesses, your story will lack depth and won’t engage your reader.

What is your writing process?
I start with characters, place them into a situation, and let them run with it. I then write down the story as it develops and only go back and change something after I get all of the story down.

How long have you been writing?
I began in 1987, but took time off until I found it again in 1998. I have been writing constantly ever since.

How did you get started writing?
After completing a Terry Brooks novel, I felt let down by the ending, not something common with his novels, and said…”I think I can do this.” The next day I began work on my first novel.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?
Panster for sure. I have plotted, but only until I get all the storylines to match up. Then it is back to being a panster.

What part of the writing process is the hardest for you?
Finding the time where I can get into my “zone” and get after it. Once I am there, it is like opening the flood gates.

What tips can you give on how to get through writers block?
There are times where I am not writing, but I am constantly developing and working on the story. I would say, keep working the story over in your head until it clicks for you. Once it clicks, you will be able to sit down and let the words roll out.

What kind of music do you like to listen to while you write?
There are many times I write with no music at all. It seems that a movie and a sound track play in my head without music, but when I do, it is music that is in the same theme as the novel I am writing. For this series, Bon Jovi - I’ll Be There For You, would be a great fit.

Who is your favorite author?
Terry Brooks
Who is your favorite character from a book?
Richard Rahl - Terry Goodkind - The Sword of Truth Series

What is your favorite book?
The Sword of Shannara - Terry Brooks
Read anything good lately?
Insurgent
What do you like to do when you're not writing?
Think about writing, really. But I do golf, play baseball, and spend a lot of time with my family.
What advice would you give an author just starting out?
Never give up. If this is your dream. Never quit. Never take no as a final answer and never give up.
Have you had anything else published?
Taking Angels - Book 1 in the Angel Crusades Series. A paranormal romance thriller.

What's your next project?
I am currently working on Angel Scorned, Book 2 in the Angel Crusades Series. And I am looking at releasing a teenage covert operatives novel in the next several months. Along with those, I also work on screenplays adapting my novels, but also create original screenplays.
