Blurb

Reports of a dragon spotted in the Crystalline Mountains has King Daemon on edge. He'd rather not believe it's true, but a confirmation from the High Priest is hard to ignore.
Del has a secret. One not entirely his own. A secret too dangerous to keep, yet one that if revealed could cost someone he cares for her life.
When a vision forces Rowlin to leave his home and the only world he's ever known, he has no idea what lies ahead of him.

Clayden realizes that to uncover the meaning of the words written in the book marked only with the name Spiros he must make a journey to a place he left long ago. A place to which he never intended to return.

As Prince Dominus' fourteenth spring nears, he dreams of being king. And if his mother has her way, those dreams may come true sooner than he thinks.

The wheel of time continues to turn and each step taken, each choice made, pushes them all inexorably forward down the path toward the Watchtower. For there will be war and neither gods nor men can stop it. The only questions that remain is where they will stand when the time comes and which side will win.

Excerpt

Dominus scoffed. “You really think you’re capable of calling a dragon?”

Kaida’s smile faltered as she lay the book back on the table. “Let me show you what I’ve been working on and maybe you will too.”

     “I’m waiting.”

She fixed her gaze on the book, her lips trembling ever so slightly as she read the spell. “Incendia extraho spirius mico veneficus lux antiquus serpens lucror adeo is quisnam dico vos efficio meus liceor.”

The light in the lamp flickered as above the book a ball of flame slowly materialized. It grew brighter, writhing and turning in an unseen wind. Wings of flame unfurled, a barbed tail flicked, and then the dragon lifted its head and stared at Dominus with coal black eyes.

Casson gasped. “Gods save us.” His voice sounded strangled. “A dragon.”

“Isn’t it beautiful?” Kaida asked, completely ignoring her brother’s horrified expression. “The book calls this a dragon’s doppleganger and it says that if the spell is done right, it can call a real dragon.”

At the moment, Dominus was much more interested in the dragon right in front of him, rather than one that might or might not currently be hiding out in the mountains. True, a real dragon would be of greater use, but he was not certain that Kaida was capable of handling such a beast yet.

“Is this a true dragon?” he asked. “Or is it only for show?”

“Ignis,” Kaida said, and the dragon threw back its head to let out a belt of fire toward the ceiling. Casson flinched.

The heat from the fire was real enough, but could it burn? “Very nice show, but is it useful?”

“There’s nothing flammable down here but the books,” Kaida said.

Dominus looked toward Casson, who visibly paled beneath his gaze. “I can think of something we could try the fire out on.”

Book Review: Dragon Ridden by T.A. White

Blurb: Tate leads a life full of secrets. Having an incredibly life-like dragon tattoo that moves when nobody is looking and no memory of her life prior to eight months ago can make things difficult. When a momentary impulse leads Tate to return an ancient hairpin to its rightful owner, it sparks a chain of events that soon affects every aspect of Tate’s life. Now with several people convinced that she holds the key to unimaginable power, Tate’s about to learn how a single action can have unintended consequences.

With no allies to watch her back, Tate’s going to have to move fast if she wants to survive in the city of Aurelia, where friends are often enemies in disguise and appearances are deceiving. She’ll find that monsters walk the labyrinth beneath Aurelia’s streets where the secrets to Tate’s past rest. Unlocking her hidden memories might just be the only thing keeping Tate alive and preventing the coming war.

I give it 3 stars

My Review: Dragon Ridden is a fun and exciting book full of secrets and danger. With each new twist and turn, more is revealed not only about the main character, Tate, but also about the strange and wonderful city in which she finds herself.

This novel has a fast paced plot with plenty of action and characters you'll be dying to know more about. Tate is sassy and tough, but still manages to have her soft moments. Ryu is mysterious and intense. And the minor characters are for the most part interesting and complex with lives and stories all their own.

Drawn unwillingly into a dangerous situation she doesn't understand and beset by enemies on all sides, Tate is forced to find allies in unlikely places as she struggles not only to regain memories of her lost past, but also to find her way through a complex plot she was never supposed to get involved in.

Throw in a dragon, a banshee, a sadistically deranged Night Lord, and a heaping dose of thieves, cutthroats, and pirates, and you have one wild adventure you don't want to miss.

The book ended with things pretty well wrapped up, and yet there are still unanswered questions which leave me hoping there will be a follow up novel. Even though the book has some rough spots, it really is a good read. I would gladly recommend it to any fantasy fan who likes lots of kick butt action and plenty of intrigue.

Flash Fiction Challenge

This week for Chuck Wendig's flash fiction challenge http://terribleminds.com/ramble/2013/12/06/flash-fiction-challenge-200-words-at-a-time-part-3/  it's the third round of the 200 words at a time challenge and this time I chose to continue the following story.

 (Liz Neering's beginning)

Isa stood in the deer blind, the tip of her rifle pointed through the narrow slat out towards the forest beyond. To her teammate she looked like a stranger, a bundle of cold-weather clothing with only a thin strip of brown skin showing between scarf and snow goggles. The brown strip turned to face him, black eyes a shadow behind polarized plastic.

“I fucking hate these sneaking missions,” she said. “I just want to shoot something. I don’t think that’s a lot to ask.”

Tyler snorted. Behind the heavy fur lining of his coat, he opened his mouth to speak, sending a puff of white into the air. But whatever he meant to say was lost in the sudden crunch of snow, the snapping of evergreen boughs. The hunters’ eyes snapped back to the woods.

Lumbering out from the treeline was a massive creature, wrapped in battered leather, dragging a heavy metal ball and chain. Blood dripped from its mouth and hands. Its head turned as it scanned the field. The hunters drew close together, crowding around the blind’s small opening.

“I can shoot it, right?” Isa hissed. “It’s far enough away. The others won’t hear.” Tyler shouldered into her, shaking his head. But neither moved the muzzles of their rifles, and neither took their eyes off the beast.

(aspeed's contribution)

Isa then saw a flash out of the corner of her eye, a swift movement that almost made her flinch, and was enough to tear her eyes away from her target. “What the hell was that?”

“What was what?” Tyler asked.

She pulled out her binoculars and scanned the shadows where she had seen it. Right now she saw nothing but darkness. “I think we have a secondary contact,” she said, even though she had no visual confirmation. After a while, instinct took over, and her instinct told her they were being watched, even though they were well hidden in the blind. The problem was, the blind wasn’t camouflage from everything. Just most things.

Tyler snickered. “Getting nervous?”

She tapped her earpiece, and said, “Team two, come in.” They were higher up the range, and theoretically had a better vantage point.

Normally communication was instantaneous. But there was nothing but a white noise hiss over the line. “Team two, respond.”

Now Tyler’s eyes flicked towards hers, his jaw tightening in annoyance. He hit his own earpiece. “Team two, report.”

Nothing. That wasn’t good.

There was an odd thunk on the roof of the blind, followed by a dry scritching. Isa’s stomach burned, and she tightened her grip on her rifle. Something was on top of them.

(my contribution)

"Still think it's just my nerves?" Isa asked through clenched teeth.

Tyler eyed the roof. "No. And I don't think we better wait around for Team two, either." He moved toward the door.

"Whoa, wait a minute." Isa grabbed his arm. "Where do you think you're going?"

"I thought you wanted to shoot something."

"Yeah, but I don't want to get killed in the process. You have no idea what's up there."

The scritching sounded again, followed by a squealing sound which could only be strips of the tin roof being peeled off. "I don't know about you," Tyler said, "but I don't like the idea of being stuck in here like a sardine in a can. At least outside we have some room to maneuver."

Isa hesitated, then gave a brisk nod. With both hands firmly grasping her rifle, she followed Tyler out the door.

 Five Facts about Hero, Cursed

 1. Lenka Tahile is a South African name. The MC was born in South Africa.

 2. "Swindle" is Lenka's celestial name. He is a son of Hermes. Figure it out.

3. The hawk on the cover is not a tattoo. His name is Bill and he's Swindle's Fauna Morph, an animal that morphs into a weapon on command.

4. Though it isn't showcased on the cover, Swindle has extremely curly hair. Out of control, I tell you.

5. Just like Solar, Defeated, this novella switches back and forth between the present and the past, and reveals what life was like for Swindle before the Oracle of Delphi came along.

DESCRIPTION

Skate punks, kleptomaniacs, clairvoyant visions and reincarnation...

...THE SHEPHERD is unlike any other Young Adult novel you have ever read.

Mike Evans here. Sixteen year old skate punk squatting in a white-trash trailer park with my loser drunk Dad. Seems I lost most of my friends when Dad lost our home in foreclosure. Only Anita stuck by me. Worse, I keep having strange clairvoyant visions of things that always come true.

Then I almost ran over Nadia in my Geo. A passing truck finished the job – left a crumpled heap of skin and bone on the road. I fixed her. Me.

Now this fourteen year old girl won’t leave me alone. I sorta let her sneak in my window when she needs a place to crash.

I have a double life: daytime at school, Anita, skating, and then my nights with Nadia. She's my secret friend, gives me money and listens to my problems when nobody else will.

My world is spinning out of control. Old friends have turned enemy, my grisly visions of death won’t quit, and Anita’s intentions make my head spin. Even with all that, I’ve got bigger stuff to worry about.

Nadia’s hiding something.

˃˃˃ "I could not put this book down. All I keep thinking about is what could possibly happen next. I felt as if I was back in high school with them!"

˃˃˃ "It's almost a love triangle of epic proportions or so you think....Travis blew me away with this book, I never saw what was coming."

˃˃˃ "Amazing, I loved Mike and Anita. The characters that I didn't feel could redeem themselves did in ways I never thought possible. I loved the ending and so not what I thought would happen. I love the element of surprise."

Sharp, witty, dark and gritty, The Shepherd is the must read YA paranormal thriller of 2013. Get your copy now!

Chapter 1

Thursday, September 9th, 5:15 p.m.

Shit happens, life happens, but for some reason it happens to me a lot.

I was kinda hoping life would give me a break – maybe crap on somebody else for a while.

Yeah, right.

I mean, look at Justin Shelby.  I’m sitting here in my car, in the McDonald’s drive through, and what is he doing?  He’s climbing up the side of the damn playcenter.  Probably faded on prescription pills he stole from his mom.  This guy is begging for life to hit him upside the head.  But it never does.

And then there’s his buddy, Tommy Schroeder, goading him on.

“Do it man!  You’re almost there!”

One of the wrestling elite of Moses Lake High School, Tommy’s mere presence inspired Justin to new heights of idiocy.  Justin scaled the side of the outdoor playcenter like Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible.

Justin skated religiously, a regular at the downtown Moses Lake skatepark across from the Aquatic Center.  Like most of us skaters, he was thin, moderately athletic, and had a strong sense of balance from endless hours busting his ass on the concrete.  Climbing the playcenter wasn’t any more dangerous than the skate tricks we recorded and posted to YouTube.

He quickly reached the apex, damn spider monkey.  He stood exalted atop the dome of the airplane-shaped plastic toy.  An elementary kid inside gawked up at him from the Plexiglas window.

“This is classic!”  Tommy whipped out his cell phone and started recording.

Looked like a good idea to me, so I did the same.  You never know what folly you might catch on video.  I mean, this was live action stuff.  I could be ten seconds away from a viral Youtube video, Gangnam Style.

Tommy encouraged Justin’s antics with loud catcalls.  Justin proclaimed his status as king of the hill, arms held high.

“Yeah bitches, hell yeah!”  Justin yelled and hooted at the top of his lungs, pumping his fists in the air.

I narrated to my potential audience of millions, “This is a flagrant violation of the rules.” I panned my cellphone camera over to the placard by the entry gate and zoomed in to catch a clear shot of the playcenter rules.  “There it is folks, rule number three:  No climbing outside the playcenter.  And we can’t forget rule number four:  No children over the age of fourteen allowed.  For the record, Justin is sixteen.”

Returning to the action, I caught Tommy’s upturned face lit with excitement, and then slid the view up the playcenter to Justin.  “There’s the big man, putting on a show for his new best friend.”

It kinda stung in a way I didn’t like to admit, that Justin was doing all this for Tommy.  A couple months ago, Justin was my best friend, my idiot.  Or so I had thought.

But Tommy was cool.  Popular and wealthy, he also happened to be one of the biggest arrogant pricks in my class, and Justin’s ticket into the ‘cool crowd.’

“Always trying to prove something.”  I shook my head.

Tommy and I don’t get along so well.  It’s a Rachelle thing.  One of those life things that happens to me so often.

I should just keep my mouth shut and catch some choice video, but you know what they say, the observer always affects the observed

“Hey ass munch, get down before you break your neck!”

Justin’s head whipped around to the sound of my voice, causing his body to sway with the sudden movement.  As soon as he spotted me parked in the drive-through a nasty smirk bloomed across his face.  In a moment of sublime inspiration, Justin dropped his pants with a show of lily-white butt cheeks.  He obviously hadn’t seen me recording with my cell phone.

Tommy noticed me too.  “How about a double McAss burger Mikey?”

He loves to call me Mikey.  He knows I hate it.  No one but Tommy calls me Mikey.

The girl delivering my cheeseburger held her hand over her mouth to cover her braces as she giggled and snarfed at the sight of Justin’s naked rump shaking back and forth while he taunted, “It’s a full moon tonight Mikey.  Hope you enjoy the view!”

Perfect.  Now Justin’s calling me Mikey.  God I hate that name.

“It’s Michael, asshole!  And thanks for the killer video.  Goin’ straight to Facebook.”  I held my cell phone out the window for him.

Justin looked back over his shoulder in surprise, attempting to pull up his pants at the same time.  The knee-jerk reaction caused him to lose his delicate balance atop the apex of the plastic airplane.  He fell onto his right side, and slithered down the side of the playcenter.  His hands shot out across the smooth surface, clawing, seeking a grip.  There was nothing to grab.

I watched him slide inexorably down the outside of the playcenter, pants and underwear still down around his thighs.  He tried rolling into position for a feet-first landing.  The maneuver would’ve worked if not for the fence being so close to the playcenter.  The bright yellow, powder-coated aluminum fence that had aided his climb to the top now blocked his landing on the way down.

Justin’s momentum came to an abrupt halt as he hit the top of the fence ass first.

I cringed and almost ruined the shot.  “That’s gotta hurt.”

Justin’s blood-curdling scream of agony made my skin crawl.  He sat there, squealing like a stuck pig.  The top section of fence tubing had impaled him where the sun don’t shine.  Pegged in the holiest of holies, he had two inches of aluminum post going in through the out door.

“Oh my god this is insane!”

I saved the ninety-three second video clip of Justin on my smart phone and posted it directly to my Facebook timeline.  I had a momentary twinge of conscience.  I mean, he was still crying, and Tommy was trying to climb the fence to help him.  It looked really painful.

“I can always delete it later …”

I was gonna call for help, but Tommy already had his phone out as Justin yelled in his face, “Call 911!”

I only had a few minutes to get to work.  As I drove off, I thought about taking that video down.  I probably should have.  But it only took fifteen minutes for my video clip to find its way to over 200 students at Moses Lake High School, shared over and over to dozens of Facebook profiles.  My first ever viral video.

I guess life happens to Justin Shelby too.

New Book Release: Dark Light by Kyra Dune

Title: Dark Light (Web of Light Duology #2)
Author: Kyra Dune
Genre: YA Fantasy

Blurb

The Web of Light, a magical force lost for three hundred years, has been recovered by the heirs of the land of Solice. But its return bears a heavy price. A price that will be paid in blood.

Seva and Valdor have fled to the Outlands, where an unanswered question drives them apart. And as Valdor seeks to prove his worth, Seva struggles to control the power threatening to consume her.

But the web is not what it seems and by the time the truth is discovered, it may be too late.

Excerpt

Small stones rose from the brook bed and floated around Seva. She arranged them into circles and sent them spinning. Droplets of water flew through the air. Behind her eyes, a dull throbbing thrummed.

This was the sort of magic she’d been practicing even by herself. The sort of thing most Gari-Za could probably do. The headaches had returned, keeping her awake at night, and the queasy feeling in her stomach made it hard to eat.

She set the stones spinning faster, until they were nothing but streaking gray blurs. The faces of the Gari-Za thinned and bulged when seen through the whirling stones. Nightmare faces. Her stomach rolled.

They want a show. The words came from inside Seva’s own mind and they sounded like her words, only it felt as if someone else was speaking them. Throw the stones into the crowd. Show them what you are. You’ll feel better. No more headache. No more sickness. Only bliss. It would be so easy. All you have to do is push.

No! The thought shouted across her mind. I am not going to kill anyone. The surface of the brook began to bubble as Seva directed her magic at it. Steam rose up, further blurring the world around her until she wondered if this really was a dream. A light feeling swept over her. It seemed as if she could float away like a cloud.

The throbbing behind her eyes became a pounding. Something was pulling apart inside of her. The stones shivered like small animals trying to escape her grasp. She was losing control and the urge to strike out, to cause pain and mayhem, was growing stronger.
