Book Review: Night by Alan Rodgers

This book started out good. I was drawn in. I was curious about the characters and their situation. But about a third of the way through, the pearl began to loose its shine. The plot started to get a little boring. And Tim is definitely one of the most annoying characters I have ever come across. And not just because every time he turns around he gets knocked unconscious, though that certainly didn't help. He is clueless. I mean he has all these "feelings" that are part of being what he is, but he doesn't understand them. He spends most of the time when he's actually conscious wandering around in a kind of daze. Sure, I've read books about characters with powers they don't understand, but Tim had someone to explain all this to him. He had his grandfather, who was the same as him, and a major force in his life, who certainly should have explained these things to him. Nobody was trying to hide what he was. Trying to protect him or whatever, like in other stories I've read. He's always known what he is, so for him to be so ignorant is ridiculous.

Things get weird in the middle. Really, really weird. Like some kind of fever dream. And what was up with the random dude who got abducted by aliens? I can't count how many times I seriously thought about putting this book down and saying forget about it.

Towards the end, there are a few good scenes. One that even had me tearing up a little. There's no doubt this book does a good job of describing a scene in such a way as to make the reader feel as if they are really there. But that doesn't make up for all the things I didn't like about this book.

And then came the ending. All I can say about that is, really? I dragged myself through this entire book for that?

Mason Wade had fought death, and to some degree he had won. The fire of a phoenix coursing through his veins made him feel like hell. Each of his new senses forced him to reach into a past he knew was better left alone, yet he was grounded in the primal desire to protect Indie, to be a lethal supernatural guardian. The discovery of a secret library within the Falcon Manor landed River Sabine, the very girl who first stole his heart and left him in his darkest hour, front and center in his life. Mason and the others discovering how closely his past is connected to the paranormal war at hand have only scratched the surface of how deeply entwined those who lurk at the Falcon Manor are; a painful lesson Indie is forced to learn as she fights to rise to her role as the Queen of the Veil and protect the hearts of her own. An impossible decision must be made; no matter the choice lovers will divide. The only real question is whose sacrifice will be for the greater good.

In life he haunted death she haunted him. Love is eternal... Weeks away from her twenty-first birthday, the date where she would assume control over her family legacy, a night terror robs Indie of the balance she was clinging to. Like the dream she had before she lost her family, it predicts a fatal catastrophe on the horizon. The fight between life and death, good and evil, began the moment her thundering heart awoke her. Everything changed after that dream. The one thing that keeps her curse at bay is stolen, and then her enigmatic boy arrives in the flesh. Face to face with her fiery born-again lover Indie realizes that the only way she can prevent the tragedy before her is to surrender everything she was, is, and could be. Can she bend the laws of nature and fight the improbability that fire and ice could ever be one? As far as Indie is concerned, there is not a myth, spoken fate, or curse that is stronger than her stubborn desire to have it all ... including him.

About Jamie Magee

Jamie Magee has always believed that each of us have a defining gift that sets us apart from the rest of the world, she has always envied those who have known from their first breath what their gift was. Not knowing hers, she began a career in the fast paced world of business. Raising a young family, and competing to rise higher in that field would drive some to the point of insanity, but she always found a moment of escape in a passing daydream. Her imagination would take her to places she’d never been, introduce her to people she’s never known. Insight, her debuting novel, is a result of that powerful imagination. Today, she is grateful that not knowing what defined her, led her on a path of discovery that would always be a part of her.

Book Review: Tears Of Heaven by RA McCandless

This book is really awesome. I love all of the characters, especially Del. This may be in part because she reminds me of one of my own characters, but mostly it's because I enjoy snark. And she's fierce to boot.

One thing that bothered me is the use of 'burn' and 'burning' as curse words. I'm not a big fan of the F-Bomb, but I feel like you either use it or you don't. It's like in those movies where they dub over the bad words with other words that are just ridic
ulous. I find it jarring. Also, there were a couple of transitions in the early half of the book that felt a bit abrupt to me and one incident that never did make any sense at all.

Despite those few flaws, this is still a five star read for me. I loved it. I liked seeing Del's past as well as her present. I will tell you if you're a crier like me (I cry when it's happy as much as when it's sad) you're going to need some tissues.

I highly recommend this to any fan of urban fantasy and I'm looking forward to picking up the sequel.

Cover Reveal: Hell Becomes Her by R.A. McCandless

Release Thursday, November 11th

Hell Becomes Her, the latest book in R.A. McCandless’ Flames of Perdition series, releases Thursday, November 19th.  Here’s what all the fuss is about:

Angels should be a human’s worst nightmare. Del didn’t think there was anything worse than angels, or their fallen kin, demons. She and her partner Marrin helped to keep the world safe from the horrors of escaped demons for generations. But when Del’s daughter is kidnapped by a shadowy group, Del will find that the world is even more dangerous than she suspected.

There are worse things than angels and demons.

The doors slid back exactly as they were supposed to, and Del pointed both her SIGs through the opening. She knew it was wrong. Two hands on one gun with a straight-thumbs hold was the correct way to give proper support to aim and shoot quickly and consistently. Hollywood liked to show action heroes shooting from the hip, or blasting away without aiming and taking down a room full of bad guys, whose best response was to fire impotently at the ceiling or comically into other bad guys. It was all so much useless eye candy. A gun in each hand gave support to neither and made it impossible to sight. She’d need independent use of each of her eyes, like a chameleon, to train the guns on different targets at the same time.

Del knew it was wrong, but it looked damned impressive from the receiving end.

“Hold your fire!” a voice commanded from outside the elevator. “Hold your fire!”

Del wasn’t certain if the order was for her, the two ranks of Ljosalfar soldiers in their body armor who surrounded the elevator, or both. Either way, holes weren’t being punched into her favorite skin and that was a good thing. She might still die, riddled with bullets and spitting blood, but not yet. Not yet.

She unwrapped and wrapped her fingers on her SIGs, and smiled.

“Hello boys,” Del said. “Who wants some?”

“Hold your fire!” Alfred Waru said again.

“Alfred, you cunning bastard,” Del purred. “Come on in and give me a hug. I’ve solved almost all your problems. There’s only one left.”

“I’d rather you put down your weapons,” Alfred replied. Del homed in on his voice from behind the second rank of soldiers, but couldn’t make him out through all the helmets. “We’ve locked the elevator. The doors won’t close, and the car won’t move. Let’s talk about this.”

“Talk about what?” Del said and laughed. “How you lied to your people?  How you betrayed and murdered your own?  How you’ve doomed them through your schemes and plots?”
