Charlie has made his way to Kiloreen, ancestral home of the elves, in his quest to find the Silver Catacombs and the lost magic that lies hidden within. Instead, he finds a branch of the Elven Resistance Movement, a secret underground organization of elves bent on retaking Kiloreen and freeing their people.
If they are willing to stand alongside humans, the elves will be a great help in the struggle against King Richard, but there is still the matter of the lost magic. For if Charlie cannot find it, the war may be lost before ever it has begun.
Raised voices sounded. The rapid fire of an automatic machine gun cut through the stillness of the morning. Miranda pulled Peter close and hugged him tightly. She hated to send him out into the woods all alone, not knowing how long it would be before Charlie would come. But he would come. There was a feeling inside her that assured her of that. And when he did, he would need Peter to help him be strong.
“Now go.” Miranda lifted the flap and pushed Peter toward the woods. He stumbled across the ground, pausing a moment to look in the direction of the gunfire. He turned back toward Miranda.
“Go, Peter,” she called as loud as she dared. “Go.” She watched him turn and run off into the haunted darkness of the woods. Then she stepped out of her tent and moved toward the gunfire.
The gray fog, the red dawn, the screams, the gunfire—she walked through it all feeling as if she were in some nightmare. She had dreamed, before they came to this place, but she had forgotten most of it. All she could see clear in her mind was a huge, white magestone glowing softly. She had to go there. She had to bring Charlie there. And so she walked.
Shadow figures emerged from the fog and Miranda stopped, holding up her hands to show that she was not armed. “My name is Miranda. I know that Commander Onguard sent you here for me. I won’t resist.”
Two soldiers, dressed all in black and armed with automatic rifles, stepped out of the gloom.
